Hi Paul, thanks so much for your reply. As it turns out, when the shear pin broke on the back auger, a small fragment of it shattered and then got stuck/jammed under the auger wheel housing, between the housing and the impeller shaft. Nightmare really. After many attempts to get it off,(it wouldn't budge with hammering or anything force I could apply) I had to bring it to a mechanic who used a hydraulic press and air hammer to force the auger off the shaft. What. A. Job. Anyway, all is good again and I just put it all back together and it's working fine again. Thanks!! Hope no one else goes through this. What a giant pain in the you know what!!!!

Hi Tim, the hole in the rear lines up with the hole in the front fan. If you can't find the hole most likely the shear pin broke off inside it.

I know it's very hard to see in there but, the sheared pin will be a different color than the impeller shaft. I have a short pin punch I use to knock the pin out. You can also use the new pin. I have a needle-nose vice grip that I use to hold the new pin so I don't smack my fingers with the hammer.

Hi Paul, so glad I found this page. I’ve been pulling my hair out with my snowblower. I can’t change the shear pin in the back. The blade rotates fine without a shear pin which makes me think it’s somehow stuck. I can’t rotate the back blade to find the darn shear pin hole. I’ve tried knocking it with a hammer but it won’t budge. Any ideas?

Hi Genaro, Yes, TruFuel works very well in that snowblower. You can leave the fuel in the snowblower all year long.

Hi Doc, With today's redesigned snow blowers from Ariens, Toro and others if the front of the snow blower rides up that means the auger shear pins are broke. Otherwise, except for a few models - they stay on the ground. A few to stay away from are the 30 inch - 12-inch impeller snow blowers made by MTD and sold as Craftsman, Troy-Bilt, Cub Cadet, and MTD Pro.

A direct replacement to your old 832 is the Ariens Deluxe 30 EFI. Also, the Ariens Platinum 30 SHO and Toro Power Max HD 1232 are a solid step up and you'll be amazed at how well they handle and throw the snow compared to your older machine.

If you don't need that wide of a snow blower anymore the 28 inch Ariens Deluxe SHO, Toro 928, Toro 1028 and 30 inch Troy-Bilt Arctic Storm snow blowers are all great choices.

Paul

I have an Ariens 832 bought in 2004 that is a pain because it rides up a lot and times will not move forward.

I put about 18lbs of weight using pvc pipe filled with rocks but it still rides up and I have to do more pushing than I think is necessary.

Can you recommend a snowblower for a dirt driveway that doesn't have the habit of doing this.

Hi Michael, I don't know exactly but to be on the safe side use a 90w rear axle oil. You can get a small bottle to most auto parts or farm stores.

Hello Paul, I have the Troy Bilt 2490 and it did a great job for me this past winter against 24 + inches of snow in PA. As the weather warmed, I noticed the from auger gear box was leaking oil. Can you recommend a grease or gearbox oil? I couldn't find anything in the owners manual. I must have sheared the front pint so not sure if the gearbox is damaged. Looks good to me but currently in the evaluation process. Thanks - Mike
