I see a lot of you visiting my used snowthrower store and the MovingSnow Store, but not many of you have purchased some of the great deals there. So I am going to spend a little time explaining how to purchase a snow thrower or snowblower part off of eBay safely and confidently.

eBay is huge. Thousands of items are bought and sold every hour of the day. eBay itself is very good at policing the transactions, but it still is a good idea to know what your rights are as a buyer. I personally have bought or sold hundreds of items and in the last two years I have not had one bad experience.

You will find many NEW snowblowers for sale on eBay. There are more and more companies and dealers using eBay to sell their products now-days. Its a great way for them to have a much larger audience and it allows them to give better deals to more buyers. A LOT of these sellers offer free shipping on their new snowthrowers.

NUMBER ONE: If you are new to eBay spend some time reading http://pages.ebay.com/securitycenter/ on rules and tips to keep you and your money safe.

NUMBER TWO: Set up a PayPal account. www.paypal.com. Use PayPal to buy and sell items on eBay.

PayPal gives you an added layer of protection against fraud. I use it exclusively to buy and sell items on eBay. In fact I have my eBay listings set so I only see listings that accept PayPal. (PayPal charges the seller a fee. Some sellers don’t like this and refuse to use PayPal. In my opinion, I want that extra level of protection, so if the seller is unwilling to provide it, I won’t buy from them)

NUMBER THREE: Buying Safely on eBay.

Read the entire description. Pay particular attention to the condition of the snow thrower, shipping, and any extra costs that the seller may charge you.

If you don’t understand something in the description, email the seller and ask. This is a great way to see if you want to do business with that person. Be reasonable and give the seller 24 hours to respond.

The shipping and handling charges should be reasonable. If the shipping charges seem too high call a trucking company in your are (i.e. Yellow Freight) and ask them what a reasonable charge would be. I don’t see outrageous charges for snowblowers and snowblower parts often, but some of the other areas of eBay (i.e. Security Cameras) foreign shippers try to sell you an item cheap and then charge you more for shipping and handling than the item is worth.

If you decide to buy from someone who only accepts checks or money orders be sure you understand how long the seller will hold your item until the check or money order clears. (there were a few fraudulent buyers a few years ago that were buying with money orders and then canceling the money transfer AFTER they received the item)

If you are looking for a great deal, but don’t really care what brand of snowblower you buy, set your eBay preferences to “Lowest price+shipping” That way you can see the best deals.

If you want to see an item, set your preferences to “nearest first” That will show you snowbowers whose physical location is closest to you first. You may find what you want just down the street or in the next town.

Keep your cool. Don’t get into a buyers frenzy and bid more than you can afford or more than the item is worth to you. Don’t be afraid to let an item go. eBay is so large that a similar item will usually come up soon.

What else do you do to buy on eBay safely?
