The Craftsman Model 88846 is designed to clear lots of snow quickly. This snowthrower is a high capacity snow thrower. This unit will move MORE snow than the Craftsman tractor mounted snow thrower. This size snowblower is a great value for the features and price compared to many of the snowblowers offered by other manufactures. It is big, heavy and just what you may need to really move snow. In addition this year it has a larger motor, bigger gas tank, and easy to use controls.

This snowblower is very comparable in size and capacity to my all-time favorite snowblower (16 horse Gravely Convertible with 33 inch blower) and costs thousands less than the Gravely did 20 years ago.

This snowblower has a lot of new features and worthwhile benefits.

It is easy to use and drive. It has 6 forward and 2 reverse speeds. It uses triggers to control each wheel so you have ”power steering” with this machine. It weighs in at almost 400 lbs so it is too heavy to push down on the handles and turn so the trigger control steering is the only way to turn it. The power steering is nice. It allows any adult to easily operate this snow blower. In spite of it’s size it is one of the easiest snow throwers to use and control.

Besides the power steering it has single lever pitch control, remote 190 degree crank for chute rotation, and a clutch lock so you can control the snow blower with one hand while you shift gears and move the chute. This machine is large enough to handle the toughest conditions winter can throw at you.

Yes this snow thrower is a big unit and will quickly clear even the largest driveways. The price tag is probably more than many of you want to spend. But the price is comparable to smaller units from other manufactures. The value for the dollar is good enough that you should seriously consider this machine if you regularly blow more than 6 inches of snow on driveways larger that 16 feet by 80 feet.

Single Handed Operation: You can drive the snow thrower easily with one hand to make adjustments to the chute or change speeds without stopping

4 cycle, 420 cc Overhead Valve Motor: This Craftsman motor is larger than the one on the 33 and 45 inch professional snowthrowers last year and larger than what is on the snow throwers from the big four. It has plenty of power to bust through drifts and move the heaviest snows. The 4 cycle Overhead Valve (OHV) engine is quiet. (Not all of the other manufactures have updated their literature as of August 27, but so far this is the largest motor available for this size snowblower)

45 inch clearing width: The 45 inch width is wide enough to make short work of most large areas yet small enough to easily clear a normal sidewalk. You can quickly clear most sidewalks in one pass. Think of the time savings of not having to make two or three passes to clear your sidewalks.

22 inch intake height with drift cutters: The intake is high enough to tackle most drifts. From what I can tell only one manufacture has a professional model with a higher intake. The drift cutters help keep a clean edge when working the really deep stuff.

Power Steering: This feature allows anyone to easily control the snow blower. Once you use power steering on a snowblower you will never want to go back to one without it. A small trigger located on the bottom of each hand-grip allows you to effortlessly change the direction of the snow thrower. It really saves the back muscles from having to wrestle a snowthrower without power steering around.

Chute Rotation and Pitch Controls: This model uses a conventional (read bulletproof) crank system for chute rotation and a Single Lever Pitch Control.  It is not as “high tech” as the four-way joystick but will hold up well under severe use

Electric Starter: Of course this Craftsman snowthrower has push button electric start. Just plug the 110v power cord into any wall outlet and push the button.

Huge 16 inch serrated auger with 16 inch impeller: The 16 inch impeller is the largest walk-behind impeller available today and larger than most of the tractor mounted snowblowers. This thing will move snow!!! The serrated auger effectively chews up the snow before throwing it into the impeller. (If someone else has a larger capacity please let me know)

6 forward, 2 reverse speeds: Plenty of speed choices so you can get your snow blowing done quickly and efficiently.

Headlight: I don’t know about you but there are times when I am out early in the morning or late at night getting the driveway cleared. The integral headlight is a welcome addition to this snow thrower.

5 quart fuel capacity: 5 quarts of fuel on a snowblower is a lot. Most snowblowers only have 2 quarts or so. You should be able to run hours before you have to fill up.

Extended Chute/Extreme Chute Capacity: The new longer and larger chute creates better throw patterns than the old short chutes. When blowing light snow this will help a lot to keep it from blowing back into your face. The longer chute will allow you to throw the snow farther with more control to put in the right spot.

Warranty: 2 year manufactures defects warranty with up to a 5 year optional protection plan (read Are Protection Plans Worth It on Craftsman Snow Throwers) I WOULD STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU PURCHASE THE OPTIONAL PROTECTION PLAN FOR THIS SNOW THROWER. If you have the need for this large of snowblower, you are most likely going to use it a lot. The optional 5 year protection plan is a good value for this machine. All parts and labor is covered for any problem you may have with it for the full five years. The only items not covered under the protection plan are tune-ups and flat tires. If you use Sears for your tune-up you get 10% off the parts.

But what is interesting to me is that this size and style snowthower has one of the highest return rates of all the snowthrowers sold. So is it the snowthrower that causes the high return? Or the buyer making a decision based solely on price?

Is This Snow Thrower Right For You?

Light Use Only: Designed for light use. A small sidewalk, a one-car cement driveway.

Does One Thing Well: This snow thrower works well if you have foot traffic that packs down the snow before you can get it moved off. The way single-stage throwers are designed, when you lift on the handle the rubber auger actually touches the ground and will chew off stuck snow.

Be Careful On Decks: Because of the way the auger throws you can easily scratch your wooden or composite deck.

Don’t Use On Gravel: You can also easily pick up rocks and other debris so you should never use this snow thrower on a gravel driveway.

My neighbor has a 21 inch single stage snow thrower. His drive is about the same size as mine. The single stage does not throw the snow as far as my two-stage so he has to throw it straight in front of him and works cross-ways to the drive. It usually takes him over and hour to clean his drive. This spring I had about 3 feet of snow out on my lawn. This snowblower is the flagship of Craftsman Homeowner Line for 2009.  This is a large snow thrower with a good size motor and all the special features you have asked for.

I’ll go through all the details of this snowblower below but the best news is you can get it for about half the price of comparable snowblowers from other companies like Toro, John Deere, Simplicity, and Ariens (the other big four) for a limited time. Sears is being very aggressive with the early season sale price.  I would suggest not waiting for a better deal this year.

Headlight: I don’t know about you but there are times when I am out early in the morning or late at night getting the driveway cleared. The integral headlight is a welcome addition to this snow thrower.

5 quart fuel capacity: 5 quarts of fuel on a snowblower is a lot. Most snowblowers only have 2 quarts or so. You should be able to run hours before you have to fill up.

Extended Chute/Extreme Chute Capacity: The new longer and larger chute creates better throw patterns than the old short chutes. When blowing light snow this will help a lot to keep it from blowing back into your face. The longer chute will allow you to throw the snow farther with more control to put in the right spot.

Deluxe Glide-Tech Skid Shoes: The extra large poly skid shoes are reversible and will not scratch your drive.  These shoes will not leave brown marks (rust) on your sidewalks and cement drive.

I heard no real complaints other than the chute control last year so I expect this machine to perform as well as last year’s model and be easier to use.

Light Use Snowthrower

I want to make one thing perfectly clear.  I DO NOT LIKE THIS SNOW THROWER! The ONLY reason I would recommend this snowblower is if you have a SMALL one car gravel driveway and have to store the snow blower in you kitchen when not in use.  I am giving this unit my WORST BUY AWARD.  Please read the rest of the article to find out why.

Here is a rundown of the faults as I see them: (You are welcome to leave comments and tell us why you like your machine or where I am wrong)

The Craftsman Model 88957 is advertised for light use.

DO NOT BUY this snow blower for your retired mother, grandmother or anyone who thinks they want a little snowthrower.  It is weighted all wrong and is actually harder to turn than all of the other red Craftsman snow throwers.  You have to stop the unit and move around to the front to adjust the chute.  The manual chute is hard to move for older people.  It does not have adequate traction and it will be stuck in the snow most of the time.

DO NOT BUY this snowblower because of the cheap price.  The cheap price will just make you angry when you realize how inadequate it is.

DO NOT BUY this machine because it looks easy to use.  It only has one speed forward and NO REVERSE.  The single speed is too slow for light snow and too fast for the heavier stuff.

DO NOT BUY this machine because it is small.  Don’t let the small size fool you.  Because of the unbalanced weight it is very hard to turn and use.

DO NOT BUY this snowthrower.  The tires are too small and have no real tread.  It has no traction on packed snow.

DO NOT BUY this snow thrower because it looks easy to use.  Because of the weight balance, small inefficient tires, single speed, and no reverse this snow thrower is much harder to use than all the others in the Craftsman line-up.. I can easily show you how even the big 45 inch Professional Thrower is easier to use.

This snowblower is basically the same machine that has been around for years and it has had no changes to make it better.  Watching the returns at my local Sears last year this snowthrower was returned more than all the other snow throwers combined.

By the way Sears is not the only retailer to try and sell this snowblower.  It comes in many colors and has many different names on it.  You will find that they are all the same inadequate machine.

So what is good about this snow thrower?

It has an Electric Starter and is a two stage unit. The small 9 inch auger and 10 inch impeller will throw what snow you can get it through farther than a single stage snowthrower.

The next snow thrower I will review is the most popular and the staple of the Craftsman lineup for 2009.   I am also giving this unit my BEST BUY AWARD because of one simple change Sears made to it.

The Craftsman Model 88957 is designed for medium use and will clear snow quickly. This size snowblower is a great value and the simplicity of the snow thrower makes it a very reliable machine. This snowthrower has just the right amont of features to make it easy to use and last a long, long time.

This snowblower is basically the same machine that has been around for years with one completely new and worthwhile feature.

In my opinion this snow thrower is just the right size for a 16 by 80 foot driveway.  With a street price around $600 it is probably the best value for the money snowblower on the market.

Yes this snow thrower is a big unit and will quickly clear even the largest driveways.  It has a price tag that is probably more than many of you want to spend.   But the value for the dollar is good enough that you should seriously consider this machine if you regularly blow more than 6 inches of snow on driveways larger that 16 feet by 80 feet.

Here is a rundown of the Features and Benefits of this new snowthrower:

Update 10/11/09: I had a chance to spend some time with this snow thrower this weekend and there are a few additions to this article I want to make.

* The auger has six shear pins compared to the four on the red Craftsman models.  This is because the auger has six “flights” instead of the four found on the other snowblowers.  This gives the 88830 more capacity.

* The tires are larger than I expected.  I feel you will have no traction issues with this machine.

* The skid shoes are steel.  This machine is heavier than the red Craftsman snow throwers and I feel they made a good decision to stick with the steel shoes.  You can order poly ones if you like here: Poly Shoes

*If you use a side door instead of your overhead door to start snowblowing, make sure it is at least 34 inches wide so you can get this snow thrower out.  With the steel shoes the 88830 is 32 inches wide and will not fit through a normal 32 inch door.

Single Handed Operation: You can drive the snow thrower easily with one hand to make adjustments to the chute or change speeds without stopping

4 cycle, 357 cc Overhead Valve Motor:  This Craftsman motor is  larger than the one on the 33 inch professional snowthrower last year and larger than what is on the snow throwers from the big four.  It has plenty of power to bust through drifts and move the heaviest snows.  The 4 cycle Overhead Valve (OHV) engine is quiet.  (Not all of the other manufactures have updated their literature as of August 27, but so far this is the largest motor available for this size snowblower)

30 inch clearing width: The 30 inch width is wide enough to make short work of most large areas yet small enough to easily clear a normal sidewalk.  You can quickly clear most sidewalks in one pass.  Think of the time savings of not having to make two or three passes to clear your sidewalks.

21 inch intake height with drift cutters:  The intake is high enough to tackle most drifts.  From what I can tell only one manufacture has a professional model with a higher intake. The drift cutters help keep a clean edge when working the really deep stuff.

Power Steering: This feature allows anyone to easily control the snow blower.  Once you use power steering on a snowblower you will never want to go back to one without it.  A small trigger located on the bottom of each handgrip allows you to effortlessly change the direction of  the snow thrower.  It really saves the back muscles from having to wrestle a snowthrower without power steering around.

Four-Way Joystick Control:  One of the best changes to the entire Craftsman snowblower line this year is the new Four-Way Joystick Control.  As may of you know the previous cable joystick was not heavy enough, got sticky easily and wore out after only a few seasons.  This new system uses gears and shafts to rotate the chute.  The gearboxes are sealed and should not give you the icing problems the cable system was accused of.

Electric Starter: Of course this Craftsman snowthrower has push button electric start.  Just plug the 110v power cord into any wall outlet and push the button.

12 inch serrated auger with 12 inch impeller:  I would like to see a 14 inch impeller on this machine so it can handle ALL snows, but the 12 inch is large enough to handle most snowfalls (6 to 9 inch snowfalls) You may have to drop down a gear when throwing heavy wet snow.  The serrated auger effectively chews up the snow before throwing it into the impeller.

6 forward, 2 reverse speeds:  Plenty of speed choices so you can get your snow blowing done quickly and efficiently.

Headlight:  I don’t know about you but there are times when I am out early in the morning or late at night getting the driveway cleared.  The integral headlight is a welcome addition to this snow thrower.

5 quart fuel capacity:  5 quarts of fuel on a snowblower is a lot.  Most snowblowers only have 2 quarts or so.  You should be able to run hours before you have to fill up.

Extended Chute/Extreme Chute Capacity: The new longer and larger chute creates better throw patterns than the old short chutes.  When blowing light snow this will help a lot to keep it from blowing back into your face.  The longer chute will allow you to throw the snow farther with more control to put in the right spot.

HEATED GRIPS: I don’t know about you, but my hands get cold easily hanging onto the handles of a snowblower.  The heated handgrips are new for Craftsman snow throwers and are a welcome addition.

Warranty: 2 year manufactures defects warranty with up to a 5 year optional protection plan (read Are Protection Plans Worth It on Craftsman Snow Throwers)

Sears has a 30 day price guarantee so you can buy it, watch the sale ads and come into your local Sears and get the difference refunded to you if they come up with a better deal.

NOTE: If you have the snow thrower delivered it will be delivered in a box. If you pick it up at the store they will assume you are bringing a pickup and will keep it in the shipping box.

Assembly is simple: Cut the end out of the box and drag the snow thrower out onto the floor.  Find the manual and read the assembly directions. It will only take you about ten minutes to position the handles and attach the chute.  You will need a wrench to install the drift cutters and adjust the skid shoes.

You need to adjust the skid shoes so you don’t catch cracks in your cement driveway or pick up to many rocks if you have a gravel drive.  I place the owners manual (1/4 INCH) under the scraper bar (bottom of the auger housing) for CEMENT drives and fold it over for gravel (3/8 inch).
