Husqvarna 300 Series Snow Blower Review – stronger – better – built to last

Husqvarna 300 Landowner Series Snow Blowers – stronger – better – built to last

In this article I am going to do a detailed review the Landowner (heavy-duty)  line of new Husqvarna snow blowers. Go Here to see a detailed review of the Homeowner 200 series. New 200 Series Husqvarna Snow Blowers – A Detailed Update

Introduction:

3 Years In The Making! – Instead of tricks and treats, Husqvarna went for reliability and ease of use. Instead of cheaper and thinner, they went heavy-duty and thicker.

The new 300 series 2-stage models includes 4 models. A 24 inch Model ST 324P, 27 inch Model ST 327P, 30 inch Model ST 330P and 30 inch Model ST 330T track drive. All of these new snow blowers are high capacity machines capable of taking on any snow you may have sitting on your driveway. Husqvarna is classifying these as “medium duty*” but compared to the other brands the only comparable snow blowers are the Ariens Platinum, Ariens Pro, and Honda HS. If you want something better, faster, stronger than what you had before – seriously look at these models. These snow blowers are designed for homeowners who need a high-capacity snow thrower that is robust and durable, yet comfortable to use when clearing large areas. These snow blowers will clear snow from large driveways, parking areas, sidewalks and paths, regardless of surface type, snow depth and conditions.

Husqvarna realized that most of you want a quality snow blower at a reasonable price. This year they decided to give you two distinct levels of machines. One version for homeowners that have a typical suburban driveway and another machine for those of you who do more than just clear your front drive. Something that is heavier, stronger and more powerful than the last machine you owned. This review is about the heavier duty machines.

Husqvarna has jumped way ahead of the industry and is now offering a 5 year starting guarantee! Read your manual and follow the 5 minute procedure to prepare your engine for storage. Perform the steps and 1 or 2 pull starting is guaranteed for 5 full years. 5 year starting

“* Medium duty” – new and old snow; end of driveway snow; 8-20 in, Typical “snow belt” conditions, all U.S. snow storms, regular use in all snow conditions.  (That means it will handle anything mother nature throws at you)

2014 Upgrades vs Existing models

  • New heavy-duty auger housing
  • Larger 14 inch ribbon auger
  • New cast iron auger gear box
  • Supported, balanced and straight main auger shaft for increased performance and less wear on ball bearings
  • Industries’ only cast iron impeller! 4 blades/shovels instead of 3 as on current models
  • Covered ball bearings on auger shaft
  • Heavy duty hydrostatic transmissions on all models
  • Heavy-duty skid shoes (both plastic and steel are included.)
  • Husqvarna brand engines. ALL engines are larger and sized to handle the deepest snows
  • One 30 inch track drive replaces the 1827EXLT, 1830EXLT in US.

Why Are Is The New 300 Series Better?

Here are the features that make this one of the best snow blowers on the market.

Snow Launch for Paul 1 Two-stage system – Snow is fed into the housing by a heavy-duty serrated auger and then discharged through the chute by a 14 inch cast iron impeller. The robust auger gives you first-class results operating in frozen as well as in extremely wet snow.

Hydrostatic drive system – The hydrostatic drive on these snow blowers is heavy-duty and an improved design from older hydro’s. You don’t need to warm this transmission up to get the maximum performance. Hydrostatic drive gives you infinitely variable speeds. It provides you with a convenient and comfortable driving experience. It gives you optimum control over how fast or slow you need to go for different snow conditions. No friction disks or internal transmission parts to wear out.

Power steering – The power steering has been redesigned to give you less effort. If you want to steer right – just pull the lever under the handle and the snow blower steers in that direction. Anyone who can walk behind a snow blower and use both hands can drive the 300 series. Positive traction when you need it and effortless steering when you want to turn. This system works as well as the other brands who advertise “zero-turn” steering.

Cast iron auger gearbox – The upgraded, heavy-duty auger gearbox gives you maximum durability (10-year warranty).

Cast iron impeller – Most of the other brands use a 3 bladed impeller made of welded sheet steel. Some even have a plastic impeller. The 300 series Husqvarna uses the industry’s only extra strong 4 blade cast iron impeller. In addition to the strength of cast iron the 4 blades/shovels are designed run at high speed to throw the most snow the farthest.

Ribbon auger – The open flight auger system mixes air with the snow to prevent heavy, wet snow from clogging the discharge chute. The auger is deeply serrated to cut though hard packed snow easily and quickly.

Tie strap auger support – Does your current snow blower’s auger jump up and down when you are using it? The balanced and straight auger and cast iron gearbox is strengthened further with a brace that keeps everything in place and working for years.

Auger with covered ball bearings – Not only is the auger balanced and runs without any wobble the heavy sealed ball bearing are covered with a metal cap to keep the elements out of them.

Heavy-duty plastic and metal skid shoes included –  Adjustable metal skid shoes for long lasting use on cement – adjustable plastic skid shoes for use on delicate surfaces like sealed blacktop, pavers and stamped concrete. Both sytles are included.

Boron steel scraper – Boron steel is ideal where you need a consistent and long lasting wear performance. These scraper bars are tough will wear better than the standard carbon steel found on other brands.

Electric starter – 110 volt electric start is as common now days as electric windows on cars but because there is still one brand out there that refuses to listen to their customers and put them on all their snow blowers – everyone has to call out that they have electric start. Just plug any 3-pronged outdoor cord into the connector on the side of the engine and press the button to start your engine. You’ll never have to worry about a dead battery or strained arm.

LED headlight – The LED headlight is bright and off to the side for easy operation when it’s dark. IMG_7419

Heated handle grips – If you have never owned a snow blower with heated hand grips – you wouldn’t understand how important these can be when you are out at the end of your drive on a cold, windy day. The grips keep you fingers warm and in my case the circulation going. ST 227 Heated Handgrip

Remote chute control – I like the chute rotation lever a lot. It’s fast, precise and easy. It works even when you leave the snow blower outside and there is 6 inches of hard packed snow/ice on the dash. The control is big and designed for gloved hands. Fast and easy change of the chute direction with a lever on the panel.

Remote chute deflector – The remote chute deflector is just as easy and it has detents to lock it in place. No worrying about the deflector riding up and the snow taking out your kitchen window.

Deflector extension – Th is a high-end feature that until now was only found on the really expensive snow blowers. The rubber extension gives improved snow control in extremely light and dry snow as well as making snow clearing in windy weather more comfortable. The snow doesn’t blow back in your face as much. In addition there are strong rubber flaps over all the hinge points in the metal chute that keep the snow from blowing out the seams. ST 227 Husqvarna Chute Inside

Drift cutters – Adjustable drift cutters direct deep snow into the auger housing for clearing. Drift cutters stick out in front of the snow blower and cut snow drifts in front of the snow blower. This lets all the snow drop into the auger so you don’t have to go back over the same area twice. ST 327 Husqvarna Left Front

Premium control cables – Silicone lined commercial grade control cables should never need replacing.

Oversized X-trac, heavy-tread tires – Tires are important and the deeper the tread the better. Most of us don’t use chains anymore because they scratch the top coat off of blacktop and leave brown rust stains on concrete. X-trac tires have the deepest tread and the pattern is design to give you the best traction in snow and hard packed snow.

Interlock handle – Of course it has singe hand control. You can keep moving forward, blowing snow and remove you right hand to adjust the chute or change the speed. The hydrostatic transmission is nice here because you don’t have to stop the snow blower to shift.

Clearing stick – I call it a finger saver. NEVER stick you hand down the discharge chute even when the snow blower is turned off.

Husqvarna Brand Engine

These new engine features a new Quiet Muffler that is 20% quieter than last years motors. They are quiet enough that you don’t HAVE to wear hearing protection when cleaning your driveway.

ST 227 Husqvarna Engine These engine also have a throttle. You can idle the engine if you have to walk away from it or to let it relax before you turn it off.

These engines are the most reliable engines in the industry! In fact all of the new Husqvarna Snow Blowers now come with a 5 Year Starting Guarantee!

The new (read enhanced) Husqvarna engines are manufactured by LCT. LCT is also a leading manufacturer of engines for tillers, generators, water pumps, pressure washers and log splitters. The best thing about them is if anything goes wrong with the engine your local Husqvarna dealer can service them and all the warranty paperwork is done right through Husqvarna. The dealer does not have to go directly to the engine manufacture and try to convince them the problem is with the engine, and not the engine owner. If there is a defect it just gets fixed.

The second best thing about these engines is the defect rate.  Defective engine are irritating and the Husqvarna/LCT engines have the lowest rate in the industry (though MTD has not published their rates) LCT Warranty rate is only .17%. As a comparison  Honda snow engines is .33% and Briggs & Stratton Snow Engines 1.0 %. That means about 1 out of 1000 Husqvarna/LCT engines have an issue from the start whereas about 1 out of 100 Briggs have problems.

Finally, the Husqvarna/LCT has about 4 times the average useful life of comparable B&S Snow engines, 1000 vs. 250 hours

LCT is not a “Chinese” engine. It is an American company. The engines are engineered here in the U.S. and manufactured in their own factories overseas (China). Unlike some of the other brands LCT has complete control over the manufacturing process of their engines. Yes – they make the current Ariens AX engines also. It’s time to stop calling all these engines “Chinese Junk” All the snow blower engines are currently made in China but each manufacture has different specs and controls on how the engines are made. LCT is very proud of the strict quality control and engineering specs on these engines. They are making better engines today than we ever thought could be made 30 years ago. They are dependable and built to last.
