2014 Ariens Sno-Tek 28 in. 208 cc Model 920403 Snow Blower Review

Is the Ariens Sno-Tek 28 in. 208 cc Model 920403 snow blower right for you?

by: Paul Sikkema

The Ariens Sno-Tek 28 in. 208 cc Model 920403 is the least expensive 28 inch snow blower that I recommend. The are a few cheaper 28 inch snow blowers around but most of them are Chinese imports with poor parts networks, cheap handles or no name engines. Trust me, when are knee deep in snow and you really need to get your snow blower repaired quickly Ariens has one of the best dealer/repair networks around.

Ariens Sno-Tek 28

Ariens Sno-Tek 28

This snow blower is the right fit if you have a typical 2-3 car driveway and you usually get 2 to 8 inches of snow at a time. It has enough power to handle moderate snows and the intake is tall enough to handle 20 inch drifts. If you typically get heavier snows or you get heavy, wet snows you may want a snow blower with more power. The Craftsman 28 In 277cc Dual-Stage Snowblower w/ EZ Steer 16″ x 4.8″ X-Trac is the next price point up from this snow blower and has a larger motor that will handle deep, heavy snows. The Sno-Tek 28 works well on gravel driveways and can clear a spot out in the lawn for your dogs. If you need to go through a side door on your garage please measure it. This snow blower takes at least 30 inches to go through.

The Sno-Tek uses the standard pin-lock steering that is common with many snow blowers in this price range. Under normal conditions the left tire does all the work. It pulls the snow blower through normal snow and in this mode the snow blower is easy to turn. When you get into deep snow, heavy snow or areas with poor traction there is a clip on the right wheel axle that you insert into the rim. This locks the right tire to the axle and gives you the maximum traction. In this mode the snow blower can be hard to turn on dry pavement but the snow blower is fairly light weight so it is useable for most operators when blowing snow.

I like most of the name brand 28 inch snow blowers on the market and they all have a place in someone’s garage. If I place this snow blower next to a model with more features and you and I talk about how those features will save you time at many of you will buy the more expensive model. But for you this may be just the right machine. It moves snow, it get’s the job done in less passes than a 24 or 26 inch snow blower.

This Ariens is part of their Sno-Tek line and is designed for most of us in the United States and for anyone who does not want to spend a lot on a snow blower but needs one that will do the job well. In other words if you have a 2-3 car driveway and don’t get more than 40 inches of snow a year this snow blower is a good choice.

Ariens offers eight different grades of snow blowers. Ariens is a primary snow thrower manufacture and offers snow blowers for all homeowners, businesses and commercial users. The Sno-Tek line is the economy line. The Compact is the residential line and the Deluxe is the full-featured heavy duty residential line. The Sno-Tek reviewed here is an economy unit that gets the job done year after year, but lacks features like power steering. Ariens does not make snow throwers for other brands that I am aware of.

Reviews

The Ariens Sno-Tek 28 in. 208 cc Model 920403  Snow Blower has over 230 hundred reviews and I feel they are all honest. Looking at the negative reviews all were not common issues that would keep me from recommending this machine. Two units were not assembled right at the factory and two were from the  new owner not realizing he could engage the other wheel using the clevis pin. The other 220 reviews were 4 or 5 stars. Please read the manual to learn about all the features on your new snow blower. It is not the easiest 28 inch snow blower to use, but it is engineered well, built well, and throws snow well.

You may find other “factory-direct discount” stores and websites trying to sell it, but make sure they can and will get you service if you ever need it.

All Snow Blowers need maintenance. When you get your new snow blower home be sure to read the manual, check all the fluid levels and bolts. Learn how to change the shear pins and inspect the drive belts. (The belts are easy to change if you tear one up) ALWAYS have extra shear pins on hand. Learn how to start it and operate it. Snow blower engines run differently than your lawn mower engine. Most of the time you will have the choke on to some degree. (That’s why there are 4 positions on the choke) Practice using it on you driveway. (Don’t run the engine more than 10 minutes if the temperature is over 45 degrees) If you have any questions leave a comment below and we (other readers and myself) will gladly answer your questions.  Above all PLEASE use a fuel stabilizer like Sea Foam or blue Stabil in your gas.

Value: At around $729 it is a good value.

Service & Parts AvailabilityService and parts are readily available through Ariens authorized repair centers. Home Depot is easy to work with if you have a problem.
