Craftsman 30 Inch Two Stage Model 88830 Snow Thrower Review UPDATE!
Sears Item# 07188830000 Model# 88830
I don’t have any snow to blow up here in Wisconsin yet, but a few owners of this new snow thrower have had a chance to use it and give up their review. I thought you would like to read these as they come in.
kfreeman5099 writes: The Model 88830 is a very good machine. Live in Montana and the 30″ unit does a great job. One issue is traction (that I found with packed snow). I went to tirechains.com and got a set of “V-Bar” chains. The “V-Bar” extends past the tread and they work great. Regular chains will lay below the tread; not much use.
My opinion: Sears does not carry chains for the snow throwers. In most cases you will not need tire chains. If you are in an area where you have a lot of hard packed snow the V-Bar Chain will work great.

The following review is written for the Troy-Bilt 357cc Dual-Stage Gas Snow Thrower Model: 31AH55Q5711. The snow thrower is almost identical to the Craftsman 88830 but priced at $100 more.

It is built with lots of steel and is not at all flimsy – very rugged Starts first pull in the coldest weather. I live in Western Montana and we get tons of snow. I also live on 50 acres of land in the mountains and have a LOT of area to keep clear with out buildings and paths to fuel and propane tanks. It chews the snow right up. The auto steering head is the BEST. I can change direction and pitch of the head right from console without having to crank or leave the back of the machine. The heated hand grips are nice and the headlight is great for those early dark nights. I’m a confirmed Troy-Bilt fan after getting this machine.
john.granuzzo writes: just purchased the 88830 & I’m concerned about the engine. The Sears saleman told me it was a Briggs engine which i now know it is not. Can you tell me which MFG makes the engine & how do you rate
it? i have always had faith in B&S, should i look fora unit with the B&S engine only? Thanks John G.
My Opinion: All of the 2009/2010 Craftsman Snow Throwers use the MTD motor this year. MTD has been using motors from this manufacture for almost 10 years now and they have a VERY good reputation for reliability, easy starting and parts availability. Of the 400 or so snow throwers I saw sold last year only two had engine problems I was aware of. Both were carburetor related.
